Baby Car Seat

Car baby seats are essential for your child’s safety and choosing the best safety car seats is vital.  You will go through several kids car seats by the time your child is around 8 years old.  Baby infant car seats should be rear facing until the baby is about a year old or around 20 lbs.   An infant car seat will not only keep your child safe in the car but will also provide a way for you to carry your baby from the car to the house and wherever else you may be going.

There are quite a few factors to consider before making your decision about which safety infant car seat will best suit your child’s age, size, weight and so on.  We strongly recommend that you do extensive research before you make your final selection.  Remember that you will be making your choice of child car seat based upon your child’s vital statistics.  Take the time to do some reading up on the different car seats made for children and babies and make your decision carefully.  It is not something to be taken lightly. One thing to consider is to make certain that your infant car seat has adequate restraints.  Look for a baby car seat that is a 5 point harness car seat.  There are two shoulder straps, one for each thigh and one between your baby’s legs. The general rule is that until your baby is at least 20 lbs or around one year old, you should be using rear facing car seats and after that you would switch to a forward facing car seat.  It is recommended by most car child safety experts that your child stay in a rear facing car baby seat for as long as possible as they are the safest for infants.  The next change after a forward facing car seat would be to a booster child seat and finally to seat belts when your child is old enough.

Proper installation of your car baby seat is critical to the child’s safety in the car.  The base must be carefully and properly installed for maximum child safety.  The safest spot for your car seat is the middle of the back seat.  The second safest spot is the seat right behind the driver’s seat.   In many cases, a local police officer and certified child passenger safety inspector will assist you in installing your baby infant car seats for you.

Another important factor is tethers.  Most front-facing car seats manufactured since September 1999 come equipped with a tether strap attached to the top of the seat. This tether basically hooks into a bolt in the car, adding even more stability and reducing head movement in the event of a crash. In addition, beginning in September of 2002, all new child safety seats and vehicles must be compatible with the latch system. Latch, which is short for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (combining the previously existing top tethers with two lower anchors, built into the rear of the car).

This system is designed to make the installation of a baby car seat easier and safer by attaching it directly to the vehicle instead of using the seat belt to secure it.  Just using a seat belt to secure a baby car seat is not adequate for safety.

Choosing the best baby car seat is essential for not only your baby’s comfort and safety so just do some research and look at what you will need based on your baby’s age and weight and you will likely make the best choice for your child’s first car safety seat.
