the light stays on because there is a problem with the system you need to get back to the dealer and let them look at it. warranty should cover this.

Don't mess with it.
Bear in mind that the airbag system is in effect rigged with small explosive charges to deploy quickly.
The light being on means the system is faulty, maybe in the electronics or within the mechanism itself, because of this it could deploy and blow up into your face at any moment.
Go to the GMC dealer and let them run a diagnostics on it, for your own safety.

Try unhooking your car battery for around 10-15 minutes. This usually clears out any check engine or warning lights. But if the light comes back on afterwards get it checked out as you probably have a problem with the air bag system.
