Did you use an infant carrier car seat with your newborn, or did you go right to a convertible car seat?
With our 3rd child, we only used the infant carrier for 2 months and then decided to just buy a convertible car seat. Luckily the infant car seat was from his brother, so it wasn’t a waste of money. I’m thinking for the next baby we might just get a convertible car seat instead of the infant one. What’d you use?
I haven’t read up on car seat safety in a few months, but the last I read back in September said that babies shouldn’t be left in the infant carriers when they are not in the car because it restricts the oxygen flow.

I only have one child but if I had known better, I would have went straight to the convertible seat too. He hated the infant seat (I fell for the "travel system" scheme.) Not only did he hate it but he was too big for it by 4 months old! I didn’t even truly need a stroller until he was about 6 months old either. He always wanted to be near me so I had an Ergo carrier on all the time.
I’d say go for the convertible.
convertible because it helping the baby with the back support instead of tipping back and fourth
plus i think your suppose to use it until the baby turn one or when it can start walking
We went straight to a convertible,I frankly didn’t see the point in spending the money on a car seat that you could only use for 6 months when you could buy one that you could use from birth until the child reaches the age of four!
Plus at the time we were shopping an infant carrier was over $300AUD and we could get a convertible for with a higher safety rating for half of that price!
Since I was a first time mom, I didn’t think you could put a newborn in a convertible car seat. So I had the infant car seat (came with the traveling system I had), which I had received as a babby shower gift. I used that for the first 3-4 months until I realized that he could be in a convertible car seat. So, for an early Mother’s Day present, my mom bought me a new convertible car seat that I could use in my car. We are still using it now.
My daughter is 6 months and we;re still using the infant carrier. We just find it so much easier, especially when they’re newborn, to get them in and out of the car. I never like waking a sleeping baby, and also it started getting cold when she was 3 months old, so keeping her nice and warmly bundled up in the carseat was nice.
We’re probably going to make the switch to a convertible seat in the next week.
We went straight to the convertible seat for both babies. I like the idea that it grows with the child and you get tons of use out of it.
My son was born in December, so the thought of having to bundle him all up and then carry him to the car seemed a little out of the question. I also have a convertible car seat, and might install it whe nthe weather warms up here.
My car seat actually latches into things like shopping carts so he’s not going to fall out or anything. I defintely wouldn’t use one of the grocery store baby carriers (if they even had one), and using a bjorn all the time isn’t the best option for me who has a bad back.
Although we only used the infant carrier for a few months it was still great to have for the first few months as an extra "seat" for the baby. So I could always take them somewhere and have a seat for him or put him down if I needed to pay for something.
The only way I would use a convertible right away is if I were planning to use a baby carrier that I could carry the baby and be hands free.
The only thing I liked about using an infant carrier is that it was easier to cover him up with blankets before heading out to the car (he was a newborn in the winter months). For a baby born outside of winter, I probably wouldn’t bother with it and go straight to a convertible.
If we had had to buy a new car seat for my son, I would have went with a convertible seat. But, we had our daughter’s old infant carrier that was still good, so we just bought a new cover to go over it and used that.
He is SO heavy in it, though, so he’s getting a new convertible seat for his 6mo "birthday".
With my first I used the bucket until he outgrew it. With DS2 I used it until 3 months. It was such a PITA to haul that thing around and chase DS1. I bought DS1 a new car seat with a higher rear facing weight limit and moved DS2 into DS1′s old seat.
I used a infant car seat with my son til he was 11 months old (and grew out of it), with my twin boys, who are 3 months old, they still are in an infant car seat and will be til they grow out of it.
I like the convenience of being able to take the baby out of the car while still in the car seat, and for lil babies i think they fit better in the infant car seats. But that’s just my personal preference.
Also just to let u know, i know some hospitals won’t let u take a baby home in a convertible car seat, they want u to have an infant seat, so that’s may be something to look into.

I don’t drive a convertible, so a convertible car seat wouldn’t have made much sense. i guess mine would be an SUV seat.
If you drive a convertible, you don’t need seat belts or a car seat because if you flip over, everyone’s gonna die anyways.
I used it until Olivia was 8 months old. I found it easier while shopping and going out with her…I usually did most if those trips by myself b/c my husband works so much…so it was more convenient.
I never used infant seats; we always have begun with convertibles. I think it’s a waste to buy two seats in one year for one kid!
You’re right about infant seats decreasing babies’ oxygen sats btw. Just not worth it. I babywear when Cherise is not in the car.
