I remember the whole neighborhood getting together and playing hide and go seek. Sometimes parents even joined in! Ahhh…..those were the days.

Oh the life. I was born in 1993 but my mom has raised me somewhat similar because we’re in the country. I’m so glad I’m not treated like a peice of glass. We need to live!
well of course that generation survived back then, but times have changed. once we find new technology and discover things to improve our lives, we aren’t gonna go back obviously. i mean i do agree back then ppl had more exercise by going out and playing without using the computer, gamesystems, or television. but you gotta realize that we shouldn’t waste our knowledge and ignore it. so i do agree with your idea that we were ok with the things we had back then. but now we got new things we enjoy. we might go back and see what old stuff we have today like you are now. the world never changes, but the ppl do
i’m growing up in the 21st century and i really did sort of want to live in the small town 1960′s where kids can run around and be home for dinner without the rush of the world, i think i would like it then, like in dennis the menus playing the town wide hide and go seek, i would love that, however there was also lot of bad happening in our world during that time period, like genocide, war, and crime/drugs, which is obviously is still happening now however i think that was a very revolutionary time, with great inventive and creative minds that helped shape my life and world.
i agree, it was a hard time and bravo to living through it, we now look back on it a see how the world adapted to a difficult time

I TOTALLY agree….no seat beltsd and we never had issues with automobile safety ….of course the cars were made MUCH better many years ago….strangely about the only thing that youdo NOT need license for anymore is to get pregnant ~ Whoaaaaaaaa!!! Not that i want to see it but it makes me laugh~! I remember the days youare speaking of and those who do NOT like what i am saying can get stuffed (with the truth….ok?) Bikes, BB guns, Barbies….it was all the same. sadly we live in a society now that on account of Media Saturation…and people WANTING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE and be seen, heard, and have little certificates and trophies about what good parents they are are the ones now making the rules…i.e. this: The kids I babysat years ago are the little monsters now monster grownups creating these rules….BUT…..there are more deviants out there and even I had to walk my own kids to school in a posh area of W.L.A. as there were predators everywhere. We had a code….and no one who did not know the code including the babysitter could not pick them up from school…..guess what? TWICE my children were tried to be lured into strangers cars simply from the front of the school while the alleged ‘Good Soccer Moms’ just watched. I was asked to leave the PTA as I told the women that the Bake Sale made my kids sick to their stomachs….it was the truth. It made me laugh to be invited out by a bunch of Haute Coture Mavens that didn’t realize this one thing. I am intelligent and I am a writer….oh loathe they became when they realized that whe I offered that they cater the damn bake sale as they didn’t know the difference from Baking Soda and Baking Powder….(turned out to be the truth…) anyway it freed me up one night a month….I did receive an award for being the most prepared Mom in an earthquake and I did the calligraphy for the ungrateful parent’s children’s diplomas…at the end of that school year….they apologized. Who knows what they are doing now…but my kids grew up to be really together, very savvy and than goodness for that family code which kept them alive. Your points are very well taken by me and i can ONLY imagine that i will receive a few thumbs down…but that doesn’t stop me. I get the points. I believe in the truth…and yes we HAVE become an over protective society…if I sound a bit to the left i may be but so what? You are right…i don’t ever recall one child having their eye poked out with a benign BB gun. More children actually choked on Barbie’s high heels! THINK PEOPLE!!!! I LOVE your column and kudos to you! If anyone doesn’t like what i have to say then glide on by as I have no use for you either….this IS our First Amendmant Right….you know…the freedom of speech one? It’s like if the power goes out, Oh my GOD! what now? the world stops and people just stand there with heir mouths open not knowing what to do. Here’s a clue, get out a pen and paper. I get crazy looks whenever I actually say that if the power goes out.
We didn’t need electricity as kids. We actually used our IMAGINATIONS. The more we used our minds, the better thinkers we became. Not like the Zombies of today (and I’m not talking about the video games, I’m talking about our kids playing the video games)
Yeah, I screwed up and bought them for my kid. Hell, I remember riding my bike with a flat tire on the back and no tire on the front rim and thought WOW, I have a bike.

I was born in 1974 and we played games, shared soft drinks , etc.An no one died of no meningitis or etc. These new generation of babies are extremely sensitive too stuff. But back then growing up as a kid in the 80′s we had more trees and less traffic and less neighborhoods.Now they have more neighborhoods more pedophiles and more issues. That would explain we everyone got much more fatter after 9/11. I think 9/11 made everyone afraid to LIVE
