i like this. and i wish things were still like that today
I was born in 1980. I think the times we live in now are better than any other point in history. America hasn’t seen a ground war in over a century. Serious health threats like the swine flu are have only killed a handful of people, when a century or two ago it would have taken a HUGE hunk out of the population. Worldwide violence is at historic lows, despite the common belief. Most people these days are literate, and guaranteed equal rights under the law.
As a woman, I can get elementary education the same as boys, I can pursue higher education the same as men, I can get any job I want as long as I have the skills, I can walk most places alone and be relatively safe, I can choose my marriage partner, I can choose when I have kids, I can prosecute if I’m forced into sex, I can have a bank account and credit history in my own name, I have rights to inheritance equal to brothers and/or older siblings… long story short, I have way more freedom than women 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago.
Personally, I get disgusted by those who say the "good old days" were better. Yeah, sex discrimination, race discrimination, anti-Semitism, and homophobia were GREAT things. Society was AWESOME when only rich Christian white males had civil rights. @.@
