Infant car seat or a convertible seat for a preemie?
NICU wants to start testing my son in his car seat to discharge him. Right now we have a convertible car seat, but we need to get a second seat for my husbands truck. Will a convertible be ok or will he do better in an infant seat because its more angled? Thanks!

He might do better in the infant carrier . . . but convertible seats are good from 5lbs and going up from there.
My recommendation would be to wait and do the car seat test in the convertible seat and see what the doctors say. I had low-birth weight twins – 5 lb 1 oz and 5 lbs 4 oz. My daughter also had a heart defect and went through surgery after birth. My son passed his car seat test without issue but my daughter failed her first. . . if my daughter did not pass by the time they were ready to release her then I was going to have to purchase a car-bed to take her home in. Thank goodness it did not come to that, but I would see what happens with the test just in case they recommend a different seat.
Congrats and best wishes!
My daughter was 4wks early and weighed 5lb 2oz when she left the NICU 4 days later. She was SWIMMING in her infnt seat. We have a Chicco and even with the newborn pad she was swallowed up in it. I think a conv. is to big. I would buy an infant seat for hiom if you need another anyway. With the newer ones they can last up to 1 year based on the new height and weights they hold. I LOVE my Chicco key fit 30, and the Graco snugride 32 is great also. Bigger, but can hold up to 32lbs. I would do it. I can not imagine having put Emmy in a conv. seat coming home.
If he meets the minimum weight and height requirements, personally, I’d use an infant carrier. Some convertible seats have slightly higher height limits, which are okay for most newborns, but not all preemies.
How much does he weigh? Very tiny preemies sometimes have to be sent home in a car-bed like this: http://www.amazon.com/Infant-Car-Bed-for-Preemies/dp/B0010NNBGG
