Infant Car seats- which brands have a higher ht limit and extra bases you can buy?
Our son outgrew the length limit on his car seat at 3.5 months! We was far from the weight limit and it was a pain to take him places without a carrier before he could sit up! Are there many carseats with a height limit over 29"? Also, is it pretty easy to buy an extra base with most carseats for both my car and my husband’s?
We have a couple good convertible car seats already. I’m talking about when they’re 0-5 months and can not sit up. We don’t leave our baby in the carseat at home, but when we go to a restaurant, etc, and the baby is sleeping or we want to eat and not hold her, we’d like a carrier. And we both ARE tall and that’s probably why our son outgrew his carrier so quickly. So…I’m looking for an infant carseat carrier that goes beyond the 29" range.

I think graco makes the biggest infant car seats. I’m not sure about the height limits but they have one (snugride 35) that goes up to 35 pounds, instead of 22 pounds like most other brands.
It’s not recommended to use an infant car seat as a carrying device, it impedes their breathing, lowering their oxygen levels. Especially not to allow them to sleep in it.
Once he’s outgrown the height recommendation then it’s recommended to just go to a convertible seat that faces backwards. If you get a good long-lasting one (the Graco-My Ride goes to 40lbs rear-facing and 65forward facing, 49inches forward. I believe it’s something like 35inches rear-facing. They run under $120 at Wal-mart, and should last your son at least until he’s 3…) then it’s not that much of a problem to have one in each car. I find it more convenient than when we had the bases anyway. If you’re worried about height (ie, if you and your husband are quite tall and expect him to be the same way) then you might want to consider the Radian XTSL ($300) which is a steel frame and goes to 45lbs rear facing (80lbs front) and is taller.
Add: Convertibles go from 5lbs+ usually. The Graco My-Ride goes 5-65, and the Radian goes from 5-80lbs. So if they’re under 5months then you put them in the convertible.
Leaving them in the car seat while you eat so she can sleep is still leaving them in the car seat for a period of time when they shouldn’t be. I have 2, and the safe way to handle it is to have a booster seat if they’re awake (they sell travel ones) or else to use a stroller that lays flat if they’re asleep so they can lay down next to the table. I’ll include the link about the breathing problems. There’s no reason to use the car seat as anything but a car seat.
If you insist on a car seat though, the highest one I know of is the Graco 35, it goes to 35lbs and 32 inches tall. But that’s only 3 inches before you’d run into this problem again, and if he’s under 5 months you can bet he’ll outgrow it within a couple of months. To me it’s just not worth the money to buy one that they’ll outgrow so quickly.
