Is a travel cot ok to use for a newborn baby for the first few weeks?
We were going to put a board under the mattress so that its firm enough and flat. Would this be ok? has anyone else used a travel cot for a new born?

We mostly used a pack and play (though we did use a travel cot when actually traveling when she was very young), but a travel cot is very similar and even more designed for sleep than a playpen is. It should be totally fine, and will allow you to have your infant in your room for the first month (at least) when they are eating all the time.
The one thing I did not like about using a travel crib (then or later) was that it was a lot of stooping and lifting to get the baby in and out of it (a normal crib or bassinet is more at waist level).
I must say that for the first month our baby was much happier sleeping in our bed than anywhere else. i think this is fairly typical with newborns. At the end of that time we moved her to a normal crib and she did fine there. I just add this to warn you that whatever sleep arrangements you make, be prepared for your baby to not like them and to have to maybe try something else
Some things that helped use were using white noise and having something that smelled like us nearby…
are you talking about a pack n play for an infant? if so yes and it should be firm enough already
