Is it the sitter's or the parent's responsibility to provide the car seat?
I pick up someone’s kids from daycare once a week and bring them home to feed them dinner, etc.
The parents gave me an Eddie Bauer car seat that expired in 2002, the fabric is falling off and the hooks to put it back on are actually broken off, and the straps are twisted beyond straightening. This is the seat they gave me for their 2 year old. I told them I had my own high back booster for their 5 year old.
Needless to say, I returned the POS seat and said I couldn’t get it safely installed by the car seat technician and was able to get a Britax seat from a relative (true story). However, since this happened- my Britax seat expired.
If I get into an accident, can I get ticketed for using an expired seat, even if it’s newly expired? And who should be providing the new seat? Or no one?
Thanks!
What’s so frustrating is that they’ve got a Britax Roundabout sitting in their garage… it’s been there for months.

Yes, its their responsibility to provide proper car seat. However, you are responsible if you drive kids with a expired seat. Talk to the parents, after all, the safety of the kids should be first priority!
I would write a polite letter saying your car seat has expired, I will be unable to transport your child until a safe car seat is provided.
It is your problem if you are using an expired car seat and the child is injured in a crash or whatever. Just refuse to transport the child until a safe way to do so has been provided. Perhaps mention that Walmart sells an acceptable car seat for under $50.
always provide the carseat for your child. invest in a safe one -not just a hand me down. this is the parent’s responsibility.
Its completely the parents responsiblitly! They should care enough about their childs safety, if they cant afford one there are programs designed to help and the ones at walmart are cheap and work fine. They could find used ones in good condition thru friends or others sources as well.
totally the parents responsibility. My personal opinion as a mother i would want my son in the safest i could find. i know where i live and i think its anywhere my local fire station will provide a carseat up to safety standards and decent ones at no cost. so most def i would tell there parents they need to provide one, also tell them that you dont feel comfortable taking their child anywhere in something you dont feel safe also something that is obviously fallen apart! not to mention they should care anyways after all its thier child!
its the parents responsibilty to make sure the sitter has everything she needs to take care of the child safetly. and as far as a ticket yes you can. maybe not in all place but i know you can get in trouble itd be considered child endagerment
I would tell the parents that until they provide you with a safe car seat, they can pick up their child from daycare and bring him/her to you. You ultimately have to watch your back.
It would depend on what state you’re from on the ticket, and which cop stops you. Some of them are very understanding. The parents should supply the car seat, have you asked them about the one sitting in their garage? Tell them yours expired and you need to use the one they have so you don’t get into trouble.
