Is putting feet up on a chair polite in the US during a small party ?

Hi I’m new to the US and last month my friend got his teaching certificate, so he held a small dinner party to celebrate. And after we finished the dinner, we left the table to relax and my friend sat down and put his feet up on a chair. I’m curious about whether this is a polite thing to do in the US, because in my country it is unacceptable.

I guess it would be acceptable if he was at his own place, putting his feet up on his own chair. If it was at someone else’s house, I think that would be rude. Welcome to the US! Heck, sometimes I’m beginning to think anything goes here.

lf it is a casual affair….then l can’t see anything wrong…unless the host disapproves.
It’s rude for a guest. It’s okay for a host.
It varies-especially depending on your host and the quality of their furniture.
That is unacceptable here also, unless you’re at a house where no one cares about the furniture and everyone else is doing it. But I still wouldn’t do it. that’s just wrong to me.
His party, his chair? Acceptable.
Not appropriate in someone elses’ house or at a restaurant. I wonder, though, how about a lady kicking off her shoes and tucking her legs under herself in your favorite big easy chair? appropriate?
Well, it depends. Usually, no. But if you know the person very well, and know they don’t mind, it is ok. Though it still depends on things like the type of chair. If it’s just a regular chair, that’s ok, but if its nicer furniture, you don’t really want to put your feet up on that. And definitely don’t put your feet up if you’re wearing shoes. Then there’s also the thing with who is at the party. If its just a gathering of close friends, usually no one will care, but if it’s people who you don’t know well, you probably shouldn’t get too comfortable…it just looks rude…you look a bit like the random person crashing on their couch who doesn’t realize there is a party or something.
Like when I go to close friends’ small parties, and I usually take my shoes off, it’s ok if I curl up with my feet up on the couch, and I know once in a while people will use another chair so they can stretch their feet out. It just really depends…but the main thing that determines if it’s acceptable is how close a friend the person is, and how much they care about it.
Chairs are made to sit on, not to put your feet on.
