is there anyone online who has successfully used a rear facing convertible seat with a 2 door car?
can you give me tips?
My son is about to outgrow his infant seat (2 more pounds to go!) and then im not sure what i am going to do! I have a small eclipse and there is no age requirement for turning the child where i live so i am seriously considering turning him around 8 months – which is when i believe he will reach the 22 pounds. Im hoping it takes longer though – but at this rate i dunno! hes gained 3 pounds this last month.
Also my infant seat goes up to 22 pounds but he is still fitting right now, his legs don’t hang over or anything. at his last app he was 26 in. it goes to 28 in. would it be horrible to keep him in the seat over the limit? thats the only other alternative i see as of now??

I had a 2dr Saturn SC2 and when my son outgrew the infant carrier at 8 months, I put him forward facing in the convertible seat in the middle. I live in FL, and the law here does not mandate rear facing, although it is definitely the safest. Keep him rear facing in the infant seat until he outgrows it. I would prefer you go forward facing, rather than keeping him in the infant seat past the weight limit or height limit. That does not sound comfortable or safe.
hehehe no.’.’.’
My son out grew his at 6 months and i used the converter seat until his legs were bending so much he was uncomfortable,he was a very tall baby so i had him front facing at 10 months. if his legs dnt hang over he should fit fine in a converter for a while.
I’d be surprised to hear you don’t have a law about turning a child before 1 yr to forward facing but regardless if there is a law or not, I wouldn’t recommend doing it. It’s not about breaking the law or not, it’s about safety for your child. Before age 1 and even sometime after, babies don’t have the muscle development and control in their neck to withstand a front end crash and their neck could break. Trust me In know this first hand, I used to be a nanny for a 2 yr old girl who was paralyzed from the neck down from this exact thing. She was just turned a year when her father hit a pole head on and her neck was broken in the crash. Very sad and preventable.
My advice is stick with the infant seat as long as possible, they make ones that go up to 30lbs. Once you switch to a big seat keep it rear facing and keep it in the center of the backseat. It will be a pain to get in and put the baby into the seat but you’ll just have to get into the back seat and buckle him in. It might be a pain but would you rather take the time to do that, or live with the fact that your child died or was paralyzed because you chose convenience over safety? Just something to think about.
Put him in the middle of the back seat. A rear facing infant seat and a forward facing convertible seat will fit there. (Rear facing is the safest, especially at 8 months.) If he needs a new car seat (weight requirements), check w/ your insurance company. They usually offer discounted rates.
No, DO NOT turn him around. Your state may not specifically say 1 year and 20 pounds, but they WILL have a proper usage clause, meaning you have to use child restraints according to manufacturers guidelines. Currently, there are NO convertible seats on the market that can be used forward facing before a child is 1 year and 20 pounds, so both requirements must be met or you are using the seat improperly.
Also, do not use the infant seat if your baby is over the weight limit for it. You are using it improperly and your baby could be seriously injured or killed if you got in an accident. Height is also something you need to look out for. A rear facing car seat is outgrown when there is less than 1 inch of hard shell behind the baby’s head.
EDIT: God, some of you people are really stupid! I hope you never get in a car accident with your babies because they are WAY to little to be forward facing before a year. Legs touching the back of the seat does not mean the seat is outgrown!
A good car seat for your car would be a Cosco Scenera. It’s easy to install, rear faces to 35 pounds and forward faces to 40. It’s 5x safer to keep your child rear facing to the limits of their convertible seat. This is the seat I have. My 14 month old has TONS of room!
