Airbags, better structural design to help move the crush zones away from the passengers and driver. A lot of automobile engineers have designed the cars now days to take the blunt of the impact. In an average crash, the car will be a complete loss and the people in the car will have minimal injuries. Granted there are still far to many deaths on american roadways, but they are getting far less than what they used to be.
