My car’s seat belts do not catch when I yank them but they do catch when I slam the brake? Is there a reason for this? Do they need to be replaced? I have a friend who has the same model and her’s is the same way. The car is 12 years old.

This is normal. The shoulder belt is designed to move freely for comfort and then lock up in the event of a crash. The fact that it catches when you slam the brakes means it is working correctly. No you don’t need them replaced.
rest assured that your seat belts are working as thy should for that is how thy are sappiest work when you hit a bump thy are to lock and not give slack to hold you in the car in the event of a roll over or crash to keep you in the space to live compartment of your car
