Should I continue using a car seat for my 14 year old son?
All 3 of my boys ages 8,11 and 14 still use car seats. They are all very small for their age.
My 14 year old prepubescent son is only 4’10-4’11 around 85 lbs, I still make him use a booster seat while riding in the car.
Should I remove the car seat and allow him to sit in the car without it? Its always been used for a good safety reasons

remove the car seat. i know kids who are probably the same size as your son, and they don’t have car seats. he will be picked on by his friends if they find out, and he’s gonna have a really hard time with it. remove the car seat.
they should all be out of the car seats. r u crazy !!
they say 4’9” is when you should stop using a car seat so stop
ANAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
YOUR 14 YEAR OLD SON DOES NOT NEED A CAR SEAT? like my 9 year old brother doesnt even use one.. jeezz
haha..jesus christ..you love calling your boy a prepubescent kid..guess what? he’s 14..we get it..we don’t need to hear the prepubescent b.s for dramas sake!!..do you have any idea how bad it is for him -the way you over-protect and monitor his every moves..seriously, everyone need’s to read the question’s that you have asked on your profile page, like i have done..you seem to have some serious issue’s lady..your whole life revolve’s around finding way’s to discipline this kid..that’s what all of your question’s revolve around..do you have something against him?..that kid is gonna be a freakin’ mess when he get’s older..lol..and you are 100% to blame!
Troll
Get rid of the car seats for ALL of the kids. The last thing you need is for your kids to get teased about this….
yes…damn he is 14, you must make him feel like a loser. wow yea get rid of that thing right away
your son 14 should not be in a carseat
It’s sad so many people feel the need to lash out at you. It IS a little odd to hear about a 14 year old boy still sitting in a booster seat – but you’re asking the question, so that means you want to find out about it. The answer is that at 14 years old, regardless of height and weight, he is fine to sit in the seatbelt. As for some of the serious ding-dongs on here suggesting that kids only need booster seats until they’re 5 – WHOA! Kids shouldn’t even START using a booster seat until they’re about 5 years old, the bare minimum in most state laws is 4 years and 40lbs for using a booster, but most 4 year olds aren’t ready to sit appropriately in a booster seat, and sitting a 5 year old child in a seatbelt alone is literally risking his life. :O My sister is 9 years old, 60lbs and uses a booster seat. She’s very tiny. But even if she’s still tiny, by the time she’s 12, we’ll remove the booster.
Vehicle seatbelts were made for people who are at least 80lbs and 4’9" tall. Your son meets both these requirements. And I do agree with some other posters that the mental harm being done by his peers seeing him in a booster at this age is too much. He needs to be in just the seatbelt, but keep him in the back for another year.
hes old enough to sit in the passesnger seat….much less a car seat
I did some checking on car seat guidelines and rules vary from state to state. The oldest I’ve seen listed that a child needs to be in one is 8 yrs. old, under 80 lbs, and under 57". Your son seems to be over all the recommended so he should be safe sitting on the regular seat. Why is he still in the booster? Your choice or his? Your other boys should be close to being out of a seat also. Unless there are physical reasons. Check into your state laws reguarding the requirements and get ready to ditch the seats.
Yes you should, a child should start riding in a booster seat at 4 and end at 51/2, he is far too old for that. After 5, a child should be taught how to sit on a seat.
No, you should not make your son wear a booster seat. Yes, he is small for his age but the fact that he’s 14 should immideatly put that thought out of your mind. The social shame of being 14 and wearing a booster seat could be scaring and humiliating for your son. Clearly you’re a good mother becuase by asking this question it shows, but if you care about his socail life and rep. you’ll stop making him wear a booster seat.
Good Luck.
THE LAW STATES ONCE THEY R 85 LBS. AND 4" 9 THEY R SAFE TO B OUTTA CARSEATS/BOOSTER SEATS.
WHEN IN DOUBT GO TO THE LOCAL POLICE DEPT. AND ASK THEM, OR CHECK WITH THE PEDATRICIAN.
Complete and total respect ma’am but I think that he is a little old for a car seat. The hight minimum for rideing without a seat is 4"9′ so I think that it is safe. Plus, it might be somewhat embarrasing.
are you serious
he’s 14 years old for goodness sake
what are you thinking
he needs to get out of that seat
he’ll be 18 in four years
are you still gonna have him in a booster seat.
No.
I think that what the US requires is that you have to be 60 pounds and then you can sit without a carseat. He is plenty old enough and big enough to stop.
uhh, yeah.. .
thats pretty small, but 49" is usually what you need to beable to sit without booster.. and that is 8" less than your son
yes, remove it! if a student at school realizes this it could be social suicide! Plus, i’ve never heard of anybody that age using a car seat. i’ve never heard of anybody using them past 8 years old, actually.
Edit: I just though I should tell you that i am extremely light for my age, too (16 in a month and only 99 pounds–i run a lot), and i was out of a car/booster seat when i was probably around 6 years old. i’m not sure of the exact age, but i know that through all of grade school i was in the regular seat. cut him some slack! i’m sure i was only about 45-50 pounds at that age!
okay, i’m sorry, but i read a lot of your other questions, and from another woman whose had a couple son’s herself. you are flippin weird. you spank, you let your kids who are btw 8-14 bathe together. ride in car seats? i’m sorry but you kind of make me sick.I want to know where your kids go to school b/c i dont want mine to be shot by them. seriously lady…get some counsling and prozac. you need it or you are gonna screw up your kids for life.
in my state the age to get out of booster is 8. the weight is 80. WHICHEVER COMES FIRST! i think i’d have ran away from home if my parents would have tried to make me sit in a car seat when i was 14 years old!
Call your local police department and tell them his height and weight and age! I was just in a car accident yesterday and they asked about all 3 children. They were all in either car seats or booster seats. The police officer told us that my son had to stay in his booster seat until he was 100 lbs, which I thought sounded crazy. Surely considering your sons age, he shouldn’t be in a booster seat anymore. But maybe in your state, its the law. That’s why you should contact your local police department.
MOM!!
I know safety first and all, but damn.. your going to give him a complex and get him picked on…
Seriously though, he is over the height and weight needed for a regular belt. Cut the kid some slack and go buy him an IPOD for embarrassing the hell out of him for the last 4 years… lol.
80 pounds for boosters. 4 years and 40 lbs for car seats.
I hope you haven’t scarred him for life <smile>
Have you checked the age and weight requirements lately for your state? If they can legally ride without a booster, then I would say you’re ok.
omg. The ignorance of some parents is frightening.
how long do you want him to be a baby? Maybe you can let him grow up when he is 18..do you think that will be a good time? or should you wait till he is 21..how bout 30.. it is not the size of the boy.. to me, it is the size of his mothers knowledge about how to let your children grow..and teach them more about safety.. and responsibility.. when will you start?
14!!! doesn’t he get embarrased? Get rid of it!! If your worried about saftey make them sit in the back behind the front seats – safest place in the car. Middle back seat and front passanger seat are most risky.
OMG you a tarable mother for makeing any person over 10 sit in a car seat that is just degrateing i hope your jokeing poor kid how does he feel about sitting in a car seat do you make him do it in front of his friends and you should have removed the car seat years ago and do a favour for your other 11 year old son and remove his car seat and when you 8 year old boy turns 9 remove his are you crazy or something no offence
I think the usual guideline is 5 years old or 50 pounds. Either way, he is well past that. Stop treating him like a baby.
I think he should be o.k. in a regular seatbelt as long as he stays in the back for now, unless the law in your area says differently. It can’t be an ego boost for him to be in a booster seat at his age. He is over eighty pounds, so he should be fine.
If you are more comfortable with him in a booster seat, but honostly, I think that he is probably safer without it.
Good lord! i’m sorry but that seems a bit ridiculous even if they are short! for your son’s sake, let him be free! I know they’re you’re babies, but there comes a point when you have to let them grow up!!
how embarassing for him at school i dont think you should make him ride in a booster seat i mean do what you want but i think it would be embarassing lol
He’s over 80 lbs so he’s fine. I have never in my life heard of a 14-year-old using a booster seat.
NY state law is until 49" for a booster seat. Actually I think its a recomendation rather than law.
I don’t think he needs it
No. If other kids see him in it they might pick on him.
wow, i have never heard of a 14 year old needing a car- seat..but i think he is old enough enough and big enough now not to need one.
The 14 year old should use a seat belt – the height limit is about 4’9", so he is over that and shouldn’t be in the booster. Besides, it is terrible for his self esteem to be in a booster seat and I’m sure this is a topic for teasing among his peers. Check the link below for more details.
