as long as you can find a convertable car seat that starts out with a weight that is lower than his current weight then you can go for it. We have the Graco Comfort Sport…including a link since its available in a whole slew of patterns/colors. We’ve been using it since our son was about 4 1/2 months old (2 1/2 months corrected since he was 2 months early). He loves it. He’s got a lot more room than he did in his infant seat…

EDIT – Since he meets the weight requirements go for it! I would keep the carrier handy just in case you need a back-up temporarily or something though…
Most have a weight limit of 5lbs so he should be ok. Just check on your carseat before you do.
I’m confused. what carrier? in a car? all babies are to be in rear facing carseats till 1 yr AND 20 lbs in a car. what do you mean?
you can put him in a convertible seat, many of them are meant for babies between 5-50 lbs. here is a great website to do some car seat research so that you can find one that is safe and meets you and your son’s needs.

As long as she is rear facing it can be anytime after 5 pounds. The carrier is just for conveinence. Just make sure you bought a seat that is appropriate for her weight. Many are labeled for use from birth.
If you mean changing him from an infant carrier to a rear-facing convertible carseat–I’d say go for it! Lots of people skip the infant carrier all-together and just put their newborn straight into a rear-facing convertible. As another poster mentioned, most state laws require the baby to be rear-facing until at least 1 year AND 20lbs–but there is a lot of evidence that suggests you should leave them rear-facing until they reach the rear-facing weight limit of your carseat.
My daughter is 3 1/2 months old and weighs 16lbs and is 27inches long! She doesn’t have an issue with the carrier right now. Its just a little heavy when she’s in it! I wouldn’t change until 5 months or so. But if its more convenient then go for it. I prefer not to wake my daughter up when we stop somewhere and shes sleeping! I say this because she barely sleeps during the day so its a treat!

I understand about them getting to big for the carriers… that is a tough one.. the only problem is when they do fall asleep in the car, or when you do just need to run in somewhere for a minute… you have to unbuckle them instead of just carry the load around…
Not that that is horrible.. it is doable..
But with my triplets I couldn’t imagine unbuckling them and carrying them all in to the store for some milk….
Although, we are pretty much at the end of our carrier car seats as well…
Either way it is okay for you baby to be rear facing convertible…

if your talking about an infant car seat and your child is 3 months and 14lbs they should not be to big my son is 5 months and about 18lbs and still fits fine in it.
Of course it’s safe! Some parents skip the infant carrier and go straight to a convertible seat to save money. However, if you already have an infant carrier it may be easier to use for now-It’s a bit more work getting a baby in and out of a convertible seat.
yes- you don’t ever NEED a carrier. they are just easy. as long as it’s rear facing it’s fine
The law says 20 lbs and a year old (both have to be met), but the American Board of Pediatrics now says it is best to keep them rear facing up to 35 lbs. or more if possible, it’s safer. The longer they’re rear facing the better.
Most convertible car seats for from 5-20 lbs rear facing then front face so it’s fine to switch the seat.
Yeah, that’s fine. THere’s no rule saying you have to use an infant seat, you could have used that from birth. Infant seats are really more for the convenience of being able to carry them in it while they’re sleeping, and snapping it onto carts and strollers for easy shopping and things like that. We havea regular rear facing carseat in daddy’s truck that my son has been using since birth, but I still use the infant seat in my car because I love being able to snap it onto carts at the grocery store since he’s too small to sit in the cart still.
