Despite the fact that child safety seats are mandatory and are used by each and every person driving with a baby, a large proportion of incidents result in injuries for the babies. This is not to state that the child safety seats are not useful. One of the most significant factors that lead to injuries despite the use of child safety seats is improper installation of child safety seats.
At other times, it is the wrong choice of car seat or the improper placement of the baby in the car seat that results in accidents and injuries that can be otherwise avoided. It is pertinent that the use of child safety seats should be done in the proper manner. A few tips for safety of your baby in the car are:
Child Safety Seats Checklist
- Using the child safety seats in the back seat of the car is recommended since back seats are safer than front seats. A child safety seat should never be used in the front if the car has the provision of passenger air bags. Only children above the age of 12 years should be allowed to ride in the front.
- Children below the age of 1 should be placed in a rear facing child safety seat. If your child is one year of age but does not weight 20 pounds, he will still need to be carried in car seat that faces the rear.
- From being around 20 pounds till they are 40 pounds, children can travel in
child safety seats that are front facing. Preferably the car seats should be placed in the back of the car to ensure better safety for your child and better comfort for the driver as well.
- Once the child has reached about 40 pounds, you can then start using a booster seat that helps in positioning the car seat belts properly over the child’s thighs and chest.
- The booster seat should be used till the time the regular car seat starts to fit properly on your child. This means that the lower strap of the car seat belt should come over the thighs and the upper one should cross across the chest. Under no circumstances should you use the regular car seat belt without the booster seat if the straps do not fit properly. In most cases this happens when the child is around 4 feet and 9 inches.
Choosing the Right Child Safety Seat
You need to balance the amount of money that you spend against the utility of the specific features of the child safety seat. The child safety seat that you choose should be good quality and should ensure that there is no danger for your child.
Therefore the reputation of the manufacturer is important. However, specific features should be evaluated based on the budget and the requirement for those features. If you travel long distances, a child safety seat with side padding may allow your child to sleep peacefully without the head rolling off.
Buying the right child safety seat and then using it in the right manner can ensure that your baby remains safe and travels well.
