Hello – We are looking for help in finding a safe and suitable convertible car seat that will fit in our 2006 Subaru Legacy wagon.
Our requirements:
- Convertible car seat
- RF from now – as long as possible (35/40lb)
- shallow enough to fit behind tall hubby. (6’4")
- note that we are in Canada, so some car seats aren’t available to us
We had babe’s infant car seat in the middle and that worked fine. We now have a Britax Marathon (not for long… see below) in the window seat because it won’t secure properly in the middle.
We ended up trying a Sunshine Kids Radian and a Britax Marathon at the store. The Radian was clearly a no-go; it simply would not fit rear-facing with my husband (6’4") in the seat in front of it (even in the passenger seat). Shame, because I can see that it would be *brilliant* FF, but that’s about 15 months away…
We bought the Britax Marathon from Toys r Us and have been test-driving it for almost a week. Hubby can sit in front of it in the passenger seat, but barely, and can’t drive in front of it.
Beyond this inconvenience, it’s such a pain to load our daughter into it because it’s so bulky and because of the angle of the Subaru Legacy wagon rear window frame. It means I have to cup her head and turn her sideways to slip her into the car around the obstacles! It’s ridiculous. We tried to convince ourselves it’s doable, but considering she’s only 8 months, 28" long and 14lbs… when she starts to get bigger this just isn’t practical.
So – back to the seemingly endless job of car seat shopping!
Any experience or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
He currently has the booster with no back , I hate it.. He unbuckles his seatbelt and tries to stand in the car. So im changing seats like today so he can get strapped down by the car seats seat belt also. But what kind would be safe and appropriate for a big 2 yr old
In the context of car seats of course.
Now that it is spring my 7 month maltipoo and I are making more trips in the car (to the dog park.) Up until now on quick trips she usually rides in my lap or the passenger seat and longer trips I put her in a laundry basket. But I am seeking a safer way to make car trips. I have been searching on line but does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for car seats that have worked well you?
Crude comments are not welcome or useful. This is question is specifically about the safety of my dog. I am a proud owner of wonderful maltipoo. I could absolutely care less that she isn’t pure breed; after all I got her to love not to breed. It is not that I mind someone calling my dog a mutt its just those who like to jab those comments in just to be a nuisance is something I don’t appreciate. Thanks again for those of you contributing answers that actually apply to my question!!!
my cousin just turned six and is STILL in the five point harness seat because he refuses to cooperate with the seat belt models. they have tried to give him the big kid booster seat (really light and portable and you just put the seat belt over them) but he will not leave the seat belt alone. he either unbuckles it or puts the shoulder strap behind his back!
he is getting rather tall (almost four feet now). and all of his younger cousins seem to be in booster seat by four and they stay in them just fine. the only way to keep him in a car seat is to get the baby style straps. he cannot seem to figure out how to work those! his bus driver even has to strap him down with a five point harness on the bus because he refuses to stay sitting. he prefers to stand in the seat, kneel in the seat, crawl around the floorboard.. you get the idea.
when were your kids ready to get into a big kid seat and will this kid ever be old enough for the big kid models?
the one he has now fits kids up to 90 pounds. he is only fifity pounds so he fits it fine.
its called a high back booster seat for older kids. it fits up to almost a hundred pounds. it is heavy and very large but it is the only way he will stay in the seat.
and the seat belts on the bus are designed to fit even teens if adjusted right so those should last awhile.

its similar to this one but goes up to 85 pounds. the big kid booster was for 35 to 100 pounds but he would not use it right!
hes hyperactive. and unfortunately has an issue with listening at times. his teacher also has problems getting him to stay in one place in class. he gets in trouble all the time for getting up when he is not supposed to. no matter what you do!
We are expecting baby in March and there is no way I can fit 3 car seats in my mazda 6. I was able to do 2 boosters and an infant seat but it was very very tight and I didnt feel good about the security. We will need to fit a newborn, 18month old and a 5 year old in the car. So a booster seat, toddler front facing seat and a infant car seat. Is there a car that will fit these in one row comfortably or do we need to get something with a third row? And if so what would be a good choice. I do not want a minivan or anything big like that.
Is it true that with an infant car seat, the bar must be pushed back (not in the upright position) when driving? My friends husband just installed my Babys car seat for me –having her in about 9 daysss– and he told me that when the Baby is in the car, the bar needs to be pushed back level with the back of the car seat. I had no idea! He installed the car seat for me because he’s a firefighter, and could install it properly. Not that my boyfriend or I couldn’t have done it, but I feel a bit safer knowing that he did it
) Did you have your car seat installed by the fire / police department?
Thanks girls. I work at a bank (in the drive thru most of the time) and see so many car seats with the handles still up, as if they were just snapped in the car seat base and left. I also see wayy to many young children not in seat belts, on someones lap in the front seat.. aah it drives me nuts!
I just wanna make sure I do what’s right + safest. Thanks again!
I agree beary. That is why I decided to get my friends hubby to install it for me! He knows what he is doing & is certified through the fire department!
My boyfriend thinks Im silly for having it installed by my friends hubby. He thinks that we will be taking it in and out of the car because of passengers. I rarely ever have any passengers besides him or a friend or two & there is still room. If they don’t like it, they can drive seperate.. right?
I am trying to find the best car seat for my 20 month old son, who has always been in the 100% for his age. Price don’t really matter, I just need the best car seat for him. He is currently at 31 pounds, and most car seats go for up to 40, so that don’t work with me. I want something bigger that can be used for a longer time. I don’t have much time for a research, but the little I did, Britax Boulevard is the only that grabs my attention. Does anyone experienced that being a worthy purchase ? Or any other suggestions! And do you think it will fit right in a Honda Accord ’04? Please help! Thank You
Wasn’t exactly sure where to post this question so I posted it twice. I am pregnant with my 3rd child. I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee in November. I can obviously not afford a new vehicle, and still owe quite a bit of money on this Jeep. I know i can fit the 3 car seats in the back seat of the Jeep, but it is very tight and I would like for my children to be comfortable while in the car. I have a daughter who will be 3 just a few weeks before this new one is due, a son who will be 2, 4 months after this one is due and his carseat is HUGE (i can sit in it if i wanted to). So I was wondering if anyone knew where I can get or IF I can get a small, but still safe toddler carseat or booster with 5-point harness that would give me more room in the vehicle.
I have a little girl that will be 22 Months when her brother is born in June. I have been looking at buying a double stroller, and an infant car seat for the boy. I have looked at all kinds/Prices and can’t decide.
Here is where i’m at so far:
**Baby trend sit and stand: Con:flimsy/ not much storage/ not much room Pro:cheap/ fits most car seat
**Graco Duo Glider: C: not much room/ ugly color/ front doesn’t recline Pro: fairly cheap/ lots of storage
**Baby Jogger city walk: C: much more expensive/ not sure which car seats will fit on it, P: lots of room, very versatile for configurations
**Phil and Teds Vibe: C very expensive/ not sure i like the back seat low to the ground/ not much storage/ hard to fold when i tried in the store/not sure which car seat fits. P: looks great/maneuverable
As far as car seats go i need one that will work with what ever stroller i get: i like the Britax infant but im not sure which stroller it would work with, Graco Snug ride has good ratings and is cheaper, and the baby trend is what my daughter had and worked well.
So please let me know if you have had good/or bad experiences with any of these and if im missing any that i should look at. Bottom line: what double stroller should i get and what car seat (that works with it) should i get?
Than you!
We are having twins. Our son will be 27 months by the time the twins arrive. We have a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder and a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer. I’ve already concluded that we probably won’t fit three car seats into the Lancer, but what about the Pathfinder? Does anybody have experience?
The 2 year-old will be front-facing.
It would be helpful to get specific brand and model names for the car seats. Let me know! Thanks.
I have not a clue where to start. I’ll be getting my twins these car seats ( http://www.britax.ca/car-seats/chaperone ) but have no idea what kind of stroller to get. I want something that looks nice, is safe, and works well. Any ideas?
Sorry for my horrible grammar. I can’t think I’m so excited.
I’m 6 months pregnant and making my registry. I was thinking about car seats when I had the thought that my car is a mustang so will the carseat fit?
The door closest to the car seat looks like it MIGHT be damaged, however the impact was slight and the car seat looks like it never came in contact with the door. We live in a Tort state, it SHOULD be entirely the other guy’s fault (he ran a red light and drove into my hubby driving home, no one else was in either car though.) Claim adjusters have a nasty habit of trying to wiggle out of car seat replacement (especially since this is a 0 car seat…) Should I insist on a replacement? Or is this a minor enough accident to not need one?
Britax has higher standards making it one of the only car seats you don’t replace after a minor accident. We meet every criteria for a minor accident EXCEPT that the door, while appearing not to be damaged, cannot open (so that indicates some level of damage.)
