I’m asking this question in both the baby/parent category as well as the cars/safety category.
We’re expecting our first baby in June.
Putting the baby seat in the back seat of my wife’s car is no problem.
however, I drive a Pickup with a regular cab (no back seat) – full-size pickup, 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500. The pickup owner’s manual says that it’s OK to put a child seat in the front seat (passenger side) as long as:
– (A) the passenger side airbag is shut off (there’s a switch on the dash to do this).. and
– (B) the child is in a rear-facing child seat that is correctly installed, etc.
My question is this – is the rear-facing child seat in the front of the pickup just as safe as the regular seat in the back seat of the car?
Any links to websites or studies, or other web-links with more information would be most appreciated.
THANK YOU !!!

California has a law on the books that child restraints used during an auto accident must be replaced. According to California Insurance Code 11580.011:
"Every policy that provides automobile collision coverage or automobile physical damage coverage, as described in Section 660, shall include a child passenger restraint system within the definition of covered property, if the child passenger restraint system was in use by a child during an accident."
A cursory reading of the relevant sections strongly suggests (to us) that the cost of the child restraints apply towards fulfillment of the deductible (that is, if the deductible is 0, the damage to the car is 0, and the child seat replacement cost is 0, the total damage to covered property is 0, or 0 more than the deductible.)
However, our insurance company claims that the cost of replacing the child restraints does NOT count against the deductible. Anyone out there know for certain?
Just spoke with the insurance company again, and quoted the letter of the law. After some hemming and hawing, they agreed it counted against the deductible — so I’m answering my own question, and hopefully it’ll help someone else in the future.

Hi,
I live in Fairfax County, Virginia and would like to know what would happen if a Cop stops our car to find that my toddler was in my lap and there were 5 Adults in the car (me, my husband, parents, brother). So there is no room to put the child seat.
What is the rule? Is this an offense like speeding? Would I get a ticket? What would be the penalty?
Let me know. Thanks.

in the car I mean. My daughter is 7 years old and VERY tall for her age. The law in Illinois is a minimum of 8 years old but she’s as big as some 9 year olds!
Parents: how old and/or big was your child when you let them sit in your vehicle without any child seat?
she’s about 65 pounds and 4’2".

We’re expecting our first child, and the child seat class we went to recommended the britax convertible models so you don’t have to buy two seats (one for an infant and one for a toddler). I was curious if anyone had used these for newborns and if they would recommend going the convertible route or going with an infant carrier model.
Thanks for any insights!

My child must still seat rear-facing (she is actually too tall for this, but the limits don’t take height into consideration, only age & weight, which she is under). The center lap belt is too long – I may have an upholsterer shorten it – to firmly hold any child seat. We are currently using the Graco Snug Ride which kind of works in the car. We tried several convertable car seats, but ran into the same problem. The center belt (the receiver end) is too long & interferes with the locking part of the child seat. I purchased the anchor bolt from Subaru, but do not understand how to use it to fasten the child seat. Can anyone explain it to me? Has anyone else found a solution to this problem? Unfortunately, we are not financially able to simply go out & purchase a different vehicle at this time. I travel 23 miles one way to take my child to her caregiver’s home & need her to be safe & secure. Thanks for your time!

i have a 90 Ford Ranger (a pickup truck with only one row of seats) is it completley unsafe for me to have a baby/child seat in the passenger/middle seat? if so, how can i get a new car with a back seat fast and cheap (possibly by using my old truck as a trade-in) i’m trying to save as much money as possible now that im expecting and buying a new car is really out of the question, what should i do?

When riding, I usually glance back every few minutes, but sometimes my daughter starts nodding. I stop and we take a water break. She gets sleepy because of the cool breeze, the rhythmic feelings of the bicycle, and the incessant visual stimulation, but is it alright to keep peddling with her head down? She’s strapped in, has a safety bar on her child seat on the bike, and we both have helmets.

HI,
Here is my problem. I have a 2 yr old and a 4 yr old. Both still need to be in a booster seat by law. My husband and i want to have a 3rd child, and i am wondering…. HoW Do YOu FiT ThEm AlL iN ThE CaR??????
now, i know that not every 3 child family has a people mover or a 4WD with 5-7 seats…. so, there must be child seat configurations to restrain 3 young ones safely with out the expense of a new car???? any sugestions?

Also if anything happened to my car i would use his, so if the child seat were not able to fit the bucket seat we would have to remove them and replaced with normal ones.

What does the law state as regards having a baby in a truck in a child seat if the only vehicle you have is a truck with a bench seat.
