I have never had adult night terrors, but a few months ago, I awoke in the car (passenger seat) after a couple hours of sleep. It was as if I awoke into a panic. I had specific thoughts in my head at the time, so I knew what it was I feared, BUT I had no recollection of having had a nightmare. Because I practically felt like I was in a panic, I couldn’t recall a nightmare, and it was during the first couple hours of sleep, I thought maybe I’d had a night terror. Yet, I had not moved or spoken during my sleep, as is common with night terrors, so I wasn’t sure what I’d just experienced.
Awhile later (not that much later), I was going to bed on a different night. I remember laying my head down, but I am not sure if I’d even fallen asleep, yet when I suddenly jerked upright. I felt really scared. The fear was over the same thought as before. It’s not something I was consciously thinking about, either, and I don’t think I’d thought about it during the day. It just suddenly hit me. Although I was really nervous and connected these sudden bouts of fear to going to sleep, I oddly had no worries about going back to sleep once I’d calmed down.
It has only happened 2 or 3 times, but they’ve all been fairly recently. Since I didn’t even think I’d fallen asleep during the second time mentioned above, I figured it couldn’t have been a night terror. I found out online that there is something known as nocturnal (or nighttime) panic attacks that sometimes occur during the first couple hours of sleep, and sometimes they even occur right before someone falls asleep, when they are laying down. I have experienced this panic both during the early hours of sleep, as well as just as I was laying down and getting ready to drift off.
Does anyone have any idea what might be responsible for these sudden nocturnal panic attacks. I didn’t feel any more stressed out when they started than I did during the several months before that. Also, since I am having the same fear everytime it happens………why? I mean, this fear is something I knew I was afraid of, and it’s quite a common fear, BUT I don’t normally have panic attacks over it. In fact, I never have had fear this intense over it. Do you think something has triggered this fear in me lately and made it stronger? Thanks for the ideas.
P.S. What is the difference between the psychology and the mental health sections? I had no idea which one to post this under.
I mentioned the car because I read night terrors are more common in unfamiliar places, and I don’t normally sleep in the car. It’s a familiar spot to me, but not really a familiar spot for me to sleep.
I think I read that night terrors are most commin in the first 2 or 3 hours of sleep, and I also read nocturnal panic attacks were common as one prepared to drift off, up to about 2 hours into sleep. So, it could have been either one, but since I didn’t move or talk during this instances, and because I didn’t even fall asleep during one of them (as far as I know), I assume they are noctrunal panic attacks.
I have had panic attacks before, but never over this issue and NEVER sleep or drowsiness induced panic attacks.
