CPSTs (Child Passenger Safety Technicians – aka carseat techs) do not agree with Consumer Reports: they will not release how they conduct their tests, have had several tests that have had to be retracted due to being done incorrectly, etc.
Try car-seat.org and you will find techs who can help you find a great seat for your child.
I just got the Radian 65 today for my four-month old (a bit of a premature purchase, but she is almost getting too big for her infant seat). I ordered it from Amazon after checking NUMEROUS consumer reports, both professional and just mommy/daddy reports on target.com where they also carry the seat ( I got it for $30 cheaper on amazon). I feel very satisfied with it and take comfort in knowing my daughter will be in a 5-point harness for the next several years (until 65 lbs!). Check it out! It actually got better reviews than the more expensive Britax models. elitecarseats.com has very good, unbiased reviews. Good luck!
well if you have the money, Britax have high safety rating, but they run over $250… the car seat we finally decided on after reading all the highway safety reports, consumer reports…etc… was Evenflo Triumph, its a bit more than most other car seats (about $120), but it had even a better rating than the Britax carseats. I have to warn you though, it is a BIG car seat! I have a 2004 Camry and it is right in the middle and its pretty cramped in the back seat… but I can handle that for added safety!
I am not sure how old your child is, but please do not put your child in a booster seat until they are at least 80 pounds. They do make car seat that can hold your child in a five point harness until they are 80 pounds. Here are some brands that can hold your child in a five point harness car seat longer then the 40 pound mark. For people on a budget, the Safety First Apex 65 can hold your child in a five point harness until 65 pounds. I had a Cocso Car Seat at one time and didn’t like it, but I tried this one(Safety First and Eddie Bauer are made by Cosco). If money is not so much of an issue then look at the Britax Regent and the Sunshine Kids 80 car seats. The Sunshine Kids Car seat can hold a child rear facing and forward facing from 5 to 80 pounds. The Britax Regent can hold your child forward facing only from 20 to 80 pounds. Please go to this website before making your decision on any car seat: http://www.kyledavidmiller.org.
