I would suggest one of the travel systems (like what Graco has). With these systems you get a baby carrier that snaps into a base that is strapped in the car (the base plus baby carrier becomes the car seat). It makes it very quick and convenient to get your baby in and out of the car. The travel system will also come with a stroller that will allow the baby carrier to snap onto. So what is great about these travel systems is that once the baby is strapped in to the baby carrier, you can put them in the car and put them in the stroller, and back in the car without ever undoing the straps of the baby carrier. Really handy when the baby is asleep so that you can transition them from car to stroller and/or stroller to car without disturbing thier sleep.
One of the best things to get, if you can afford it, is a “travel system.” It is a stroller, infant carrier, and car seat all in one. However, you don’t HAVE to have all that.
At the bare minimum you need a rear facing, 5 point harness, infant seat. There are some car seats that “grow with” your child but I wouldn’t recommend most of these since they are sort of big for a newborn and small baby.
Many of today’s infant car seats also act like a carrier but they are a little bulky.
