what is the safest baby carrier?
I am looking for a baby carrier for my 3 week old baby. I have heard the slings are dangerous.

There are a lot of wonderful baby carriers out there. The dangerous ones were the bag slings from Infantino. For a young baby I would look into a Moby Wrap. They take a little time to figure out, but once you do its awesome. Mei Tai carriers are also great. I started my daughter in our BabyHawk Mei Tai at 5 days old and have loved it ever since. There are also many Soft Structured Carriers available with infant inserts to ensure proper placement. Ergo Baby Carriers, Beco Butterfly 2 and Olives & Applesauce are a few to look into.

kangaroo pouch.. but youd need to be a kangaroo
Only a certain type of sling are dangerous–the "bag" slings sold under the infantino brand are the main ones to watch out for. You can google dangers of bag slings to find out for yourself. It mainly is because of the way the baby lays in there, it crimps the neck and the baby suffocates and due to the thickness of the material, the parent has no idea or the baby suffocates because of getting their face turned into the material–and again, mama thinks baby is sleeping). Pity that is the one most likely to be found in a "mainstream" store such as Target or Walmart.
I use a maya wrap (which is a ring sling–they hold the baby in a proper position and are safe), and an Ergo, for which you can get an infant insert for babies under 4 months. Both can be used up to 45-50 pounds. I still carry my six year old autistic child in them when necessary. To get a good sling or carrier, plan to spend a bit of money and go to a specialty shop, not a bigbox store like babies r us or walmart.
Not all slings are created equal. Bag slings are dangerous. When you carry an infant they should be visible and never chin to chest. Bag slings promote both — if you carry in a sling it should mimic how you cradle a baby.

Personally I suggest the Moby wrap for young infants, and the Ergo baby carrier for older babies/toddlers.
