Children MUST be in a 5 point harness until they are at least 4 years old and 40 pounds. The longer the better. Smaller children can be thrown out of the seat in the event of a crash.
Put your son in a car seat with a 5 point harness. Since he is one and over 20 pounds, you can face it forward facing. If he’s uncomfortable in the one he has now, find one that he would be comfortable in. You can always take him with you, and sit him in the car seats in the store and see what his reaction is.
He can use a convertible carseat with the 5-point harness (interior harness) at his age. He can’t move to a booster seat (which uses the car’s seatbelt) until he is 4 years old.
Forward-facing in a five-point harness until your toddler or preschooler is about 40 pounds and 4 years old, although it is likely best to ride in a harnessed seat as long as possible if you have a seat with a harness that has higher weight and height limits in a booster seat until he is ready for seatbelts (when he is about 4 feet, 9 inches tall, between 8 and 12 years old) and they now make seats with back that go up to 80lbs.
I suggest you call your local fire department and ask them…..after all, they are the ones who have the ‘child seat safety’ checks yearly……
