I moved my daughter into one around 4-5 months old because she reached the 20-lb weight limit on her infant seat. I still kept her rear-facing of course though. I actually kept her rear-facing until she hit the maximum for that (I think it was 30 lbs on my particular seat) even though she was almost 2 at that point because they’re safer rear-facing.
Then I turned the seat around and she stayed in that seat until just recently, when she reached 40 lbs (that was the max on the seat). She’s now almost 6 and in her brand-new booster seat that she picked out. Well, I let her choose from a few that I approved first
As for shopping, I just always brought the stroller with me and just put her in there.
If I was shopping somewhere that I needed to use a cart, I did once push the stroller with one hand and pull the cart with the other. It was inconvenient, so I only did that once. Normally, I’d go with my husband so he could push the cart while I carried the baby or pushed her in the stroller. If he was unavailable, I just pushed her in the stroller and just picked up the necessities instead of doing full grocery shopping.
Or I brought a bunch of blankets to put along the sides of the seat to help her stay upright…especially when turning corners!
6 months I switched him over.
How do I handle shopping?
Im not sure what you mean lol
I put him in the shopping cart, and we go shopping LOL
Both my sons were in a convertible seat from their first car ride- we skipped the infant seat. I wear them in a sling while we’re out shopping.
I usually moved my babies from the infant carrier to a rear facing car seat when they were able to sit up well & I could carry them on my hip, which on average is 6 to 8 months. It also depended on the time of year as I don’t switch them until it is warmer outside as it is much harder to get coats & such on a baby & when they are in the infant carrier, I can put the protective cover on it instead of having to layer them in heavy clothing.
My son was almost 8 months when we switched. He had reached the limits of his infant car seat, plus it was getting heavy to lug around.
For shopping if I don’t get a cart and seat him in the front, I have him in the carrier strapped to me. It takes a bit of getting used to, but I find it much easier in the long run.
We’re about to. My son is 7 months old, and he’s outgrown his infant seat. I will be taking advantage of the 15% coupon at Babies R Us probably this weekend.
When you say, how do you handle shopping now, do you mean with the fact that you can’t just tote the baby around in the infant seat? I will probably just start using my baby wrap and stroller more often. My son’s not big enough for me to be comfortable to sit him in the seat of shopping cars.
She was 7 1/2 months and able to sit on her own. I really don’t know what you would do when grocery shopping if your kid wasn’t able to sit on their own…a Baby Bjorn maybe?
I use a Floppy Seat shopping cart cover now. It’s great. It’s soft so she doesn’t hurt her head on the seat when she is happy and "hopping" in her seat. And it has little loops to hook toys on.
I moved her to a convertible because she outgrew the infant seat. No other reason. I loved the convenience of the infant seat. I have the Britax Marathon and love it. It’s a very nice, well-built seat and I feel very safe having my daughter in it. We have an Evenflo Triumph in our second car that we hardly use. That seat is mediocre. It serves the purpose of strapping her in, but I don’t feel she is anywhere near as safe as in the Marathon. Fortunately that seat only gets used once every couple months.
i always wondered the same thing! but, at around 9months, my baby would wake up immediately when we would take the carseat out, so knew it was time to switch. besides, she always wanted to sit in the basket, and not the carseat, that way she could see everything that was going on in the store. i think if you can wake up your baby without them throwing a fit, they can sit in the basket, and hold theyre bottle, then youre good to go! if not, and you want to switch, get a front carrier. that way, youll have somewhere to put your baby, when youre out and about!
if i had known then what i know now, she’d've been in the convertible seat from day one.
those bucket seats are a *nightmare*. i had a nasty - possibly permanent - case of biceps tendonitis from lugging that sucker around and the last straw was when the handle gave way while walking in the mall (baby was unhurt). worse, she puked each and every time i put her in it and she’d buck up against the straps - i guess the crumpled position they’re forced to assume was uncomfortable for her.
saari went into the convertible seat when she was 6mo old because she weighed over 20lbs and it was SO much easier! shopping is no big deal - i put her in the shopping cart child seat (she’s been in it since 4mo old, when she could sit unsupported - i just padded her with blankets so she didn’t bump or touch the bars and handle). when we were other places, i wore her in a wrap from http://www.mamankangourou.ca or she went into a stroller.
IF i have a next child, that baby will be right in the convertible from the get-go. it doesn’t take any longer to put them in and out - oh, one other thing: that "snap in/snap out" makes me nervous: i can’t help but thing that the easier it is to put in, the easier it is to come out!
My son was about 7-8 months old when we put him in his convertible car seat. He still fit more or less comfortably in his infant carrier, but he was getting close to the weight limit, and it was so incredibly heavy to carry a 17-20 pound baby around in that thing!
He was able to sit up in the shopping cart, so we didn’t have too many problems with that. He handled it pretty well. If we would have switched when he was too small to sit in the seat, I would have put him in a sling or wrap to carry him in.

I live where it’s pretty cold out, and in the last month isn’t been as low as -35 C or that’s -31F for the Americans. So, I’m waiting until it warms up a little bit first. He’s only 4 months old, so I should be able to wait until the spring, although he is 17lbs already. I just find it so easy in the bucket seat as I have the warm Bundle me, and most days he doesn’t even need a coat as it is so toasty warm in that thing. I also find naps so much easier when they sleep in the bucket. And I never lug the car seat bucket around. I got a stroller that fits the bucket seat and use it all the time, even if just running into a store for a jug of milk. I find the extra minute it takes me to pull out the stroller, saves my arms and back from lugging him around, and I hate putting the bucket on the ground in the store and then taking it home and putting it on the furniture. So I can’t imagine taking a newborn out without the bucket seat! Wouldn’t do it any other way.
