Because in the event of a head-on collision, an infants neck muscles are not strong enough to hold their head back due to their forward momentum if they are facing forwards and it can cause severe injury and even death. If they're facing backwards, there's not the whiplash effect. :) Hope that helps.

It's so that if you crash the car the baby CANNOT be thrown forward through the front window. The intertia will pull the car seat and snap the belt so that it locks and holds and IF the car seat moves at all, it will smack back and hit a soft seat only. That could do minor damage to a baby but not what would happen if it went through the front window or flew at the back of the front seats.

They face them backwards so that they can be lay down because when they are born they are not strong enough to hold them selfs up therefor they need to be layed down. They then are faced backwards to stablise the car sead because if it was the other way in the laying down position it would not be steady and start to rock.

Everyone would be safer if they faced backwards while driving. It is much easier on your body if the force of the impact is spread over your whole body rather than just the parts covered by the seatbelt. It is especially necessary for young infants because their neck muscles aren't developed enough for their relatively large heads and they can suffer major injuries if their heads whip forward in a crash.

All passengers would be safer rearfacing. My own daughter will be 3 years old in January and is still rearfacing in Britax Marathons in both cars. Children in Sweden rearfacing to 55lbs or 5 or 6 years old. It's simply safer.
